Case Study - A large public facing website built using MS SharePoint

Cardinal Health, Inc. is a Fortune 17 company that helps pharmacies, hospitals and ambulatory care sites focus on patient care while reducing costs, improving efficiency and quality, and increasing profitability. Due to their expertise in the area of Pharmacy Management, the company looked to build an online portal that would provide the latest information and research related to Pharmacy business.
One of our principal consultants was engaged to help architect and lead the implementation. While other CMS were evaluated, it was clear from the beginning that SharePoint Server would be the best tool for this job.
As the project progressed, the team hit several road blocks due to the nature of requirements that did'nt meet out-of-the-box SharePoint functionality. One of the main challenge was to design a taxonomy based content system that not only allows content to be tagged by medical taxonomy but also allows user security to be set based on the taxonomy chosen.
Our principal consultant designed a framework around SharePoint list event receivers and utilized the Microsoft Workflow Foundation Rules engine to build a security model that is highly configurable and it's flexibility not only meets the current requirements but is expected to handle any needs in the future.
